Building a Cathedral

Home page for the compiled results of the Cathedral (job purpose) exercise.

Are we here to build a cathedral?

Questioning of bricklayers on a building site went like this. Three people were asked about their job.
The first person said "I am here to lay these bricks".
The second person responded "I am building this wall".
But the third person said proudly "I am helping to build a cathedral!".

Organisations need people -

  • who understand how their job purpose and accountabilities are aligned with their organisation's purpose,
  • who are doing work that contributes to their organisation's purpose, and
  • who are able to see and feel good about how their work makes a contribution - to building a cathedral!

This is the essence of employee engagement.

And excellent Job Analysis is where employee engagement starts.

Ask these questions of each employee: What's the purpose of your role? What are you doing here? What's the purpose of ASI?
