Broken planes, higher fares

Seems like the domestic airline duopoly is returning to the old days of Ansett/Qantas. I’ve taken 3 flights in the last week (Mel-Syd-Bne) on both Qantas and Virgin and all 3 flights were delayed by maintenance issues. On top of that, the cheap fares of under $200 return Mel-Syd have all but disappeared, the average fare now more like $400 return. You know the fares are going up when you read about Virgin considering starting up a new airline offshoot that will be an even lower cost carrier than what they currently are! Singapore owned Tiger Airways should start flying from September and hopefully shake things up a little.
